This is an informational post in the hope that it might save someone some trouble in the future...
Yesterday I helped a ham buddy set up a new Pi with D-Star Commander. Afterward everything worked perfectly EXCEPT that the Pi wasn't sending emails through his new Gmail account that he'd created. I already new about and configured his Gmail account allow connections from "less secure apps" so that wasn't it.
It turns urns out the problem was that he'd used the # symbol in his Gmail password. Once that was changed and the Pi's email config file was edited, D-Star Commander could finally send email just fine.
While Gmail doesn't have a problem with using the # symbol in a password, to Raspbian this means "this is the start of a comment" when # is used in a config file! In effect, Raspbian saw that # symbol in the config file then ignored it and any characters which followed (on the same line).
