Linking to reflectors of all types (XRF, REF, and DCS) is done one of two ways, either by sending a command set in the URCALL field of the radio, or by use of a DTMF (touch tone keypad) command.
To link with a URCALL command, the radio's URCALL field (8 characters) is programmed with the reflector name in the first six characters, the module designator in the 7th character position, and "L" in the eighth character position. So to link to XRF555D, the URCALL would be set to XRF555DL. Transmit with that setting momentarily (~1/2 sec), and you should hear "Linked to XRF555 Delta" come back through the radio. Similarly, to link to DCS006B, the command would be "DCS006BL" There is no difference in operating using any of the reflectors with this image...no special setup required. They all link the same way, and operate the same way. Link...communicate...unlink.
Once linked, make sure to switch your radio back to a URCALL of "CQCQCQ" so that your audio is passed through your gateway. It's a common error to leave the radio set on the link command URCALL, in which case your audio does not get passed through, and the end of the transmission you'll hear "Linked to..." again because you were retransmitting the link command.
To unlink with the URCALL, send a "U" in the 8th character position. The URCALL would be set to "_______U" (seven blanks then a U). Transmit momentarily and you should hear "Not Linked" through the radio.
Most operators program the memories in their radios with the linking commands they use regularly. That makes linking to your favorite reflector as simple as selecting a memory programmed with the appropriate URCALL command.
To link with DTMF codes, you leave the URCALL set to "CQCQCQ" and command the gateway to link by sending a DTMF keypad sequence. For XReflectors (XRF) the first character is "B", for DCS reflectors, the first character is "D", and for DPlus (REF) reflectors the first character is "*" (star). Then comes the 3-digit reflector number, then the module. So to connect to XRF555D, you would press the PTT (mic) button, then press B-5-5-5-D. Do it slowly and deliberately, pressing each key for 1/4-1/2 sec with a small gap between keypresses. When you unkey you should hear "Linked to..." as above. The module can also be represented by a two-digit number corresponding to the letter in the alphabet (A=01, B=02,...,Y=26, Z=26). So for modules that do not have a DTMF key (E and higher), use the two-digit code. So DCS006G would be linked by sending D-0-0-6-0-7 (G=07).
To unlink with DTMF, send a single "#" tone.
