"Not linked" is normally the first thing you will hear after the hotspot boots...it's telling you that it is up and running but not linked to anything. Have you tried connecting it to another WiFi system, like a home router?
Make sure there are no special characters in your iPhone's SSID, like the apostrophe in Jeff's iPhone for example. The most common problem getting connected is a misspelled SSID or password...it has to match exactly including case. There are also some posts here on the forums related to some iPhone specific issues (like beacon settings) you may want to review.

I'm both a RPi and Linux newbie but due to your amazing code, I was able to image my SD card, configure via the PC utility and boot my first attempt. I have confirmed that WiFi is working and when I "key the mic" it shows that I am communicating with the RPi. Unfortunately I am not able to "Link" to any reflectors. I am using the same "memories" in my ID51 that worked when my DVAP (UHF version) was connected to my mac. Any thoughts on what I'm over looking?
Thanks again for sharing your amazing code!

What happens when you send the link command from the radio? If you get "Linking to..." back from the hotspot, it generally indicates a problem connecting to the reflector/repeater via the internet, and "Not linked" means that there is no entry found in the host file. If you don't get any reply back from the hotspot, it could be your MYCALL and the callsign programmed into the hotspot don't match (typo?).
When you key up, how do you know that you are communicating with the Pi (monitor, VNC connection, other)?
Watching the status text in DStarRepeater and/or ircddbgateway on the RasPi desktop can often provide a clue as to what the problem is. The Pi is already setup for VNC remote desktop operation--you just need one of the numerous available free VNC clients installed on your PC/MAC to access it. See the docs for details.

Thanks Gary. I have a display (and wired keyboard and mouse) connected to the Pi as I thought for sure there would be some intervention. To my surprise that hasn't been the case :-) I can tell the Radio, DVAP and PI are communicating, as when I key the mic, I see messages in the log getting added and even see messages in a couple of windows of Pi. I turned "logging" on but haven't been able to find where the log is written but I plan to investigate that. (Linux newbie) I can take more detailed notes this evening on exactly what the ID51 message says, but my recollection is that I get an audio announcement from the radio saying "Not Linked" Not sure if pasting graphic work (added as attachment) in this forum but here is a snapshot of my RTsystems memory locations for the DVAP. (you can ignore memory 55 as I know there are issues and have made edits after this screen capture was taken). My flow is:Memory 53 (received audio that I am not linked), Memory 54 (audio not linked). As noted earlier, if I unplug my DVAP from the Pi and connect to my Mac, the flow listed is able to link to the reflector. I then move to memory 50 to communicate. Thanks again

Gary?
OK, good, you can see the desktop windows. So to troubleshoot this, I need to know exactly what you are seeing there and hearing on the radio. The logs are in /var/log and named in the form of DStarRepeater-YYYY-MM-DD.log and ircDDBGateway-YYYY-MM-DD.log
I'd also try programming another memory to connect to something besides REF001...that particular reflector has a spotty history.
