Edit...Going to go ahead and try the Commander software...it appears to be easier to set up. Will report back... I ran the program, set it up using the config...started the Pi and it seemed to all be running properly. I shut down the Pi using the shutdown on the Pi. When it rebooted it stopped loading at...2.290850] ---[ end Kernel panic -- not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179,2) and that was where it stayed. I reformatted the SD card, reloaded the image, went through the config, started it up, everything seemed well, shut it down and when I rebooted the Pi the exact same thing happened? I'm pulling my hair out here...I don't read code

Sounds to me like you may be depowering the Pi before it's completely shut down and still writing to the SD card. At the end of the Pi shutdown process you should see the HDD activity light blink around 10 times, then nothing but the red power light. Depower the Pi by unplugging one end of the USB cable, NOT by unplugging the power supply from the wall--you want a clean break in power at the Pi, not the slowly-decaying voltage seen in many adapters as the capacitors in the PS slowly discharge.
If that doesn't work, I'd try with a different SD card, preferably a different brand/model. SD card/Pi incompatibilities are much less common than they used to be but they still can happen.

OK...figured out that problem...I was using reboot rather than shutdown on the Pi. Everything seems to be working, but I can't seem to connect to or hear anything. Should the ircDDB show disabled and D-PRS Active? Next to Repeater 1 it shows kc0cat B not linked. When I try to link to a REF the feedback from the radio just says not linked.

After several tries I got a response that said linked to ref 30 charlie, still don't hear anyone or get a response. The ircDDB screen says Repeater 1: KC0CAT B linking to REF030 C...should it say linked?About 99% of the time I try to link to a REF, it just says linking. Most of the time when I key the radio there is no ack of a transmission on the gateway box. On the D-Star Repeater box it always says CQCQCQ in the UR field when I'm transmitting to create a link. I could sure use some help here. The radio I'm using is a 91AD if that helps. When I issue the shutdown command several times when I key up the repeater window will say CQCQCQ in the UR, then after a random number of key ups it will finally say shutdown in the UR field and shutdown the unit properly. It appears when I try to connect to an XRF site it links immediately, but I still don't hear anyone.
Update: I can connect to XRF reflector, but never a REF. I connected to XRF720 and was able to carry on a QSO. I am using a cellular hotspot, not sure if that matters. I tried both my AT&T and Verizon hotspots with the same result. I can't link to REF's, but can to XRF's. I can also link to DCS's.
