Raspberry Pi 3 wifi doesn't work

I'm new to this forum. I tried to search for my issue, but I didn't find posts relating to my specific issue (that doesn't mean they don't exist - I just didn't find them - so please excuse my inexperience).
I'm just getting started with Raspberry Pi's, so I am basically clueless (but a fairly fast learner). I got a Gigaparts kit consisting of a Pi 3, a dual band DVMega and various other accessories. Apparently, that's based on the "Western" image. I sort of got that working, but others advised me to try the Commander image. I believe I followed the setup instructions to the letter with an 8 G SD card. Things seem to work if I use an ethernet connection (I can even connect to a reflector using the TT pad on my D74 - that's really neat!), but wifi is nowhere to be found (even though I made entries in the setup configuration). I realize I may have chosen the wrong options for security, but if I open the "Wifi Config" icon on the desktop (it opens the "wpa_gui"), there are no adapters listed and its status line says: "Could not get status from wpa_supplicant". The onboard wifi did work (after some fiddling) in the other image. It didn't there either but I got it running after some searches on the internet (I think I just got lucky) and it persisted across restarts after that. Could I have screwed something up by tinkering with that one to get it working (not that I remember what I had to do...)? It just seems as if wifi is not even running on the Pi. Is there something in the boot-up sequence that needs to be changed (not that I know how to do that...)? Everything else looks promising, but this is a show stopper. I was planning to use it mobile with a Verizon Jetpack hotspot (although I'm testing it with my home wifi network first).
Any advice would sure be appreciated.
