Hey guys, Im very new to Dstar and even newer to the DV-Mega and Raspberry Pi. Im up and running with no issues so far. This site is awesome and has provided me with abundant information!
However, I would like to use it mobile if possible. It would be nice if I could tether my Samsung Galaxy to the Rpi in order to get internet. My cell phone plan doesnt support a hotspot feature so I would have to use a usb cable. Does anyone have any input on how to do this? When I connect it up, nothing happens. Its like the Rpi doesnt recognize the phone as an internet source. I know the phone is working properly because I tether it to my laptop in this manner with success. I have done a search and have come up with nothing. Thank you. Kevin. K4IGZ

I tried a USB-RJ45 adapter and used the ethernet outlet on the back of the Rpi just as an experiment and it did'nt work. (Just random information ) Kevin.

The trick is finding a Linux/ARM USB driver for the phone. I have never found one. I have seen Linux drivers, but they were all written for x386/x64 compilations.

Ok, thank you sir. I appreciate it. I'll just have to explore the hotspot option with my carrier, or maybe the hotspot from tru-connect for use on the road or weekend get-a-ways. It looks pretty reliable and cheap. Thanks again. Kevin.

I use a Pantech 291L MiFi for my portable DSTAR hotspot, and also for tablet/laptop connections while we're travelling. The Samsung Galaxies I've been using for some years now have all gotten really hot in hotspot mode and they really eat the batteries fast, and of course you lose the use of the phone while it's serving as a hotspot. The batteries on the dedicated MiFi devices tend to have higher capacities, so they'll run longer between charges. Given that my new Galaxy S6 does not have user-replaceable batteries like my last one, I don't want to wear the batts out prematurely with charge-discharge cycling due to use as a hotspot.

Again, thank you sir. I appreciate the input. I didnt even think about battery usage. The stand alone mifi unit by tru-connect will be here tomorrow so I'll give it a whirl. No contract so I wont be out anything. BTW...............did I mention I love Dstar!
