Hello all...just passed my tech and picked up an Icom ID-51A Plus...and I have a lot of learning to do. Im very excited about D-Star and Im looking forward too getting on line and connecting with people all over the world. Ive been dragging my world band radio with me for about 20 years and Im looking forward to actually talking with people!!
Ive purchased a DV dongle to attach to my home computer, however I want to build a raspberry pi setup to be more mobile. I think I know the major components I need to pick up, but Ill have to admit its a bit intimidating trying to figure out the entire process. I think Im more intimidated on how to load up the image and get all of it working together...
Does anyone have a good source for step by step directions for putting it all together? Any other advice, or links, would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there any performance difference between the 2m and the 440 DV dongle? Just curious...
Thanks in advance for the help...

Congrats on your new ticket, and welcome to DStar.
I recommend you start with my tutorial on hotspots located on this forum in the Guides and Tutorials subforum. If you're going for a DVAP Dongle, I strongly recommend the 440 version over the 2m one...the VHF version has issues with lockups when used with some popular software (including DStar Commander). But...before you go buy a DVAP, consider the UHF dvMega (sold in the USA by gigaparts.com)--it is a much more cost-effective solution than the DVAP ($140 vs $280) for a Raspberry Pi based hotspot.
Used to live in Woodbridge myself during a few years of indentured servitude at the 5-sided Prison on the Potomac. :-)
