So I just finished up setting up my RB Pi and DV Dongle remote and mobile hotspot...and thanks to this forum its working very well!!
I have tested it with the AC power from the wall and a separate battery pack and it works great!!
A couple things...
1. I had to flash the memory card a couple times...so if it doesn't take just do it again. After the flash I used the setup program included in the Zip file.
2. I use a Mac and Fusion (windows emulator) to do the initial flash and it didn't work. So out came my old windows comp with vista and it worked!!
3. Sometimes when I crank up the pi it wont boot (no flashing light that shows when its working). I have found that if I just power it off and then back on it usually resolves it.
4. I have also broke out on old HDMI cable and a mouse so when I crank it up, when in the house, I can see all thats going on by connection it to our TV. It allowed me to see the wifi connections and try each one out and see the logs, etc as Im transmitting. This also verified that all the data I put in during the setup was there!!
5. All of the system commands, sent via the radio, work very well. Im able to get status messages, reboot, shutdown, etc all with ease. Status messages are sent to a GMAIL account I have set up just for the RB Pi.
6. I struggled the first couple days with this...and then finally discovered my initial DV Dongle was bad. It wasn't receiving any signals from my radio. Short trip the the Ham Radio Outlet, in Woodbridge VA and it was swapped out and all was better. Great team at that store.
7. Im using the newest RB Pi (Amazon), Edimax Wifi (Amazon), RB Pi case (Amazon), a couple small heat sinks (Amazon), 6 inch cables, one with a right angle bend for the power pack (Amazon), wall power pack (Amazon), Anker Powercore 10400 with smart technology to regulate power (Amazon, its been running for 4 hours and hasn't lost any visible power), a USB switch so when I plug in the power core it doesn't turn on right away and send continuos power (Amazon), 16 GB Micro SD (Amazon, more than I need but it was the same price as the 8 GB), small sticky velcro to hold it together in a stack (while still allowing airflow, I had these in my tool box not sure where i got them...but who desert need extra velcro for future projects!~!), 70 CM DV Dongle (Ham Radio Outlet), ID-51A Plus with hand held mic (Ham radio Outlet), Dstar Commander image (here on the forum), HDMI cable and wifi mouse (plugged into the Pi). I have not used a separate keyboard at anytime, except when I had to flash/setup the Micro SD on the windows computer.
Ive attached a couple pics...this is with the HDMI still connected.
If you have any questions please let me know!!
