I created a gmail account to be used by DStar Commander. When I tried to use the SYSINFO command I got an email from gmail saying they had prevented the connection because the device trying to connect to the account was not secure. Any ideas?

I should have known that. I had to do the same thing to another account to get Outlook to work. Thanks for the quick response. I am really liking this setup over the Western DStar I was running. We travel a lot and this makes it easy to switch networks.

Would this also apply to texting? I don't seem to be getting texts even though I entered the appropriate info and keyed "TEXT ON".

Yes...texts are sent from the program by email to your cell provider's email-to-SMS gateway, so the gmail account is used as an outbound mail transfer agent for both emails and texts.

Unfortunately, my account is using 2-step security. So less secure apps can't be used in this case.

I think, in general, it's better to just create a separate gmail account just for the MTA, as it will keep the traffic transiting the mail transfer agent from cluttering up your regular e-mail, and you can configure it separately without affecting the configuration of your main gmail account (if you have one). If you have multiple Pis, they can share the new account.
