I listen to a recording of the Thursday night roundtable on REF12A. There was a mention of connecting directly form a dvap(pi) to another dvap(PI) skipping the use of a reflector. How do I do this?

A RasPi gateway functions the same as any other repeater gateway, so you can connect to it if it's properly set up on both ends.
You have to manually add the gateway to your hosts files...the best way is to create a DPlus_Hosts.txt file in the /root directory, and add a locked entry for the other gateway:
WG9ABC 123.45.67.89 L
The destination gateway will also need to allow inbound connections to port 20001, which generally means port forwarding must be set up in the destination router to the pi gateway. Most cellular data connections, as well as many hotel and business connections will not allow port forwarding, so this won't work to gateways using restricted data connections. Also, if the destination gateway's outward-facing IP address is assigned a dynamic IP address by the ISP, then use of a dynamic DNS server will be needed to find the gateway. I don't know of any DynDNS services that work on Raspbian, but there probably are some that will work.
So yes, it can be done, but it's a WHOLE lot easier to just use one of the hundreds of unused open reflector modules instead. That's what they're there for.

If i want to add my gateway to the host files, how do i find my gateway ip address?on my gateway repeater control,i see two diferent ip's. With DSTAR Commander, if you send the SYSINFO command with e-mail and/or text message enabled, the gateway will send you a msg to tell you what IP address it is using. Regards
